Visit Costa Rica to see Humback Whales on your next Vacation
Is Costa Rica on your list of places to visit for your next vacation? If you answered "yes" to this question, then you will definitely want to consider humpback whale-watching while you are in Costa Rica. This is undoubtedly a new and exciting idea, but it is quickly becoming more popular every year.
The ideal time to view these whales is from Aug. to Oct. in the Southern Hemisphere, and from Dec. through April in the Northern Hemisphere. The humpback whale is the whale that is easiest to spot in Costa Rica. These whales tend to travel north during the summer months and then head down to Costa Rican waters in the winter months.
Some 50 Costa Rican Tour companies offer these trips to view the humpback whales. In 2007, Costa Rica recieved over 100,000 tourists to watch these whales jump and swim. During the past 10 years the number of visitors coming to Costa Rica to see the humpback whales increased around 74%, this percentage represents the largest in all of Latin America.
Costa Rica is home to the Ballena National Park, this park is in charge of protecting an area of Costa Rican beach and ocean to provide a safe area for the whales to live. The Ballena National Park is located near Punta Uvita in Puntarenas. This national park not only controls areas of the ocean where the whales are mating, but also some areas of land as well. The humpback whale has been considered an endangered species since 1967, and it is estimated that there are over 10,000 living in the world right now.
