Visit the Arenal Volcano on your Costa Rica Vacation

Located close to ninety kilometers north west of San Jose, Costa Rica, you will find the majestic Arenal Volcano. It is in the province of Alajuela in the little town of La Fortuna. It is known as the most active volcano in Costa Rica. Experts label the Arenal Volcano as the newest and also the most active mountains in Costa Rica.
Arenal has been named a volcano since the 1800’s, even though in those times it was named Costa Rica Volcano or Rio Frio. Some estimates state that the volcano is over 4000 years old. This area of Costa Rica was new up until 1937, when a few explorers climbed to the top that year.

The greatest eruption of the Arenal Volcano came about in 1968 after more than 400 years of no activity. That eruption ruined the whole region of Arenal, and stole the lives of 87 inhabitants. It finally affected over 232 sq. kms. and went on for a number of days. The explosion was so strong that it shaped three new craters. From the time of this incredible explosion, the Arenal Volcano has been active and anyone can see minor explosions very often, mostly at night.

Arenal is quite a well-visited tourist location, most of the visitors enjoy seeing the nocturnal explosions not to mention the well-known hot springs. The most popular hot spring near Arenal is Tabacon. Arenal Volcano is one of the seven volcanoes that tourists are able to check out on their vacation in Costa Rica.
