Costa Rica Cuisine

One of the very best things about traveling, is the idea of being able to indulge all your senses in the local flavors of food. There is no way to fully experience what Costa Rica is about until you venture out and with a brave heart try the food offerings.

So what kind of food do Costa Ricans eat? The traditional and most common food fare is Gallo Pinto or rice with beans ( some places prepare this with coconut milk and is delicious). It is combined with spices like coriander and sautéed with onions and served with eggs along side a beverage known as Agua Dolce (pure cane sugar and water). Another traditional dish is Casados. Served in one dish containing rice and beans, but includes meat such as pork or chicken, topped with fried plantains, and a cabbage-lettuce mix. Chorizo is a hot meal ticket, a Mexican type spicy sausage they combine with eggs and potatoes. Costa Ricans love to show off their local available flavors, such as mangos, plantains, papaya and yucca. If your brave in edibles, they also have a dish called Mondongo, also known as, beef stomach soup, or you can indulge your palette in something called Barbudos, a string bean omelet. They use a variety of local spices such as saffron and annatto, seasoning their dishes only mildly. Many Costa Rican restaurants have taken the traditional dishes and fused other influences into the menu. You will see dishes of French or African culture in a lot of meals. Where else can you find sweetened spaghetti squash as a dessert or a slice of French bread layered with jelly and cheese as breakfast ? Costa Ricans know how to take advantage of all the seafood available to them as well. For a fraction of a price of what you would pay for seafood anywhere else, Costa Rica is liberal in their seafood cuisine, offering up shrimp and tuna in a multiple of inexpensive, tasty dishes.

Learning about culture is an integral part of any vacation, especially if the culture is so unique from your own. If you launch out to check out the nightlife or local clubs, you can usually get what is called a ‘boca’. This is a small bite platter of edibles to go along with your drinks. Many of the boca’s served are mouth watering and a satisfying companion with your drink. Most commonly, Ceviche is the boca offered, but chicken and beans sometimes accompanies alcohol as well. And even turtle eggs, which is not advised due to poaching issues in Costa Rica. Alcoholic drinks are best bought as local beers, as mixed concoctions are said to get pricey. Also, it is encouraged to avoid the wines produced locally due to headaches and stomach upsets. Imported wines are expensive. For tasty non alcoholic drinks, pick a local known favorite, such as Horchata. Horchata is a cornmeal and cinnamon mix. Fresco de Frutas is as popular as it is tasty. It is a fruit topped kola diluted with water. And of course, coffee. Costa Rican coffee is typically brewed strong and served with warm milk.

Costa Rica offers so much in diverse cultural cuisine, that simply sticking with what you know becomes only a faint option. Explore all the different flavors in meals and beverages available to you while visiting Costa Rica.

Arenal Costa Rica

Costa Rica ‘s most active volcano is the Arenal volcano located only minutes out of La Fortuna. It’s daily eruptions, the rainforest and lakes around it, all spectacular destination for tourists. The arenal volcano erupted with full force in 1968 covering over 5.8 miles in hot lava and ash. Three little Costa Rican towns were destroyed in the process. Today, you can still find evidence of the 1968 eruption in crater size holes in the area. It actively has small eruptions one or two times daily now, with a smoldering small lava flow heading down the southwest side. Surrounding the volcano are geothermal mineral hot springs, some cool enough for human enjoyment. The arenal volcano is in the heart of a spectacular rainforest full of rivers and waterfalls. Arenal lake is at the base of the volcano and the largest lake in Costa Rica at almost twenty four miles long. This manmade lake is host to windsurfing and fishing. Both local and tourists fish for trout called guapote and machaca.

If you were to hop on the trails at the rainforest’s edge, you wouldn’t have to go very far before you came across one of the many suspension bridges to cross. These suspension bridges are built with the latest technology and sometimes as much as 98 meters long. Even the trails are mastered professionally so anybody can walk on them. You will know you are in an intense jungle when you catch the cries of the howler monkeys off in the distance or your guide points to the many sloths hanging from the trees. It is not uncommon to see macaws, toucans, or any of the other 800 species of birds living within the Costa Rican world.

Not a main attraction, but worthy of note is the caves located in the arenal area. The Verando Caves are at least 15 million years old. If you are claustrophobic, this is not a good pick for you as an activity. The caves are bare offerings with no modern construction and minimal amenities. It does have bats, an underground river, and plenty of crawling for those who are fearless. And for those who would rather be an observer than an active participant, the arenal region offers a gondola ride from the lake up to the volcano, with sightseeing and nature education on the way up. Those who wish to take the fast way down can take the zip line and feel apart of the jungle.

The La Fortuna waterfalls is also located in the arenal volcano region of Costa Rica. The fun way to these waterfalls is on horseback, plowing down trails and through afternoon rains in the jungle. Once at the falls, swimming is encouraged before taking the long trek back towards civilization.

Arenal Volcano National park reigns a top premiere spot for tourists and a wide variety of hotels include this in their tour packages. Due to the all the activities that can be done and so much to see in the park, it is encouraged to include in your travel planning of Costa Rica. Being a part of something so beautiful and majestic is worth the trip alone.

How nice to have someone pick you up from the airport and whisk you off to your hotel without the fear of getting lost on your own. With someone else doing the planning, you can spend more quality time relaxing. Another advantage is knowing that professionals have the best inside knowledge of Costa Rica, right down to the restaurants preferable to dine with. Designing a perfect vacation is somewhat stressful, especially if you have never been there before.

Turning to an all inclusive travel plan, is trusting someone else to execute and set the pace for a dream vacation. It can also be less expensive, to travel economically. The accommodations are usually above standards and tours exceptional. Some of the things available in all inclusive vacations include round trip airfare, airport pick up and drop off, all day meal services or gourmet buffets, all day bars, child care, live entertainment, leisure activities, maid service, entertainment, educated instructors and guides. Another frequented hotel is Hacienda Guachipelin which borders the Rincon de la Vieja National park. They offer mud baths, hot springs, live music, waterfall tours via horseback. Costa Rica Airfare

Traveling to Costa Rica on vacation could end up financially costly if you do not do your homework beforehand. As with any vacation there are peak periods of desired travel, making the prices more expensive all the way around. If you choose to travel during peak travel season, then expect to pay more in the way of airfares, hotels, car rentals, and miscellaneous expenditures. For Costa Rica, peak tourism is from May to November, and you will see more dollars added to your trip. However, Costa Rica is just as beautiful of tropical climate in dry season from December to April with weather around 72%. The rainy afternoons may just add more delight to your experience, depending on the activities you choose.

The earlier you can book your flight information and confirm the airfares, the more money you will save. Although, not always the case, sometimes you can find just as good of airfares a month early as you would six months earlier. The thing is to be patient and on top of special promotions. Keep an eye on what airlines is doing what. There are plenty of resources available to assist you with finding the best airfare rates. Upon prompt, you can compare vacation packages with airfare costs, seeing where the real value lies. Many companies offering cheap airfare prices also pad their vacation packages. The main international airport in Costa Rica is located in Costa Rica’s biggest city and state capitol, San Jose. If you intend on renting transportation, do so from the hotel and not the airport, as San Jose has over 1 million population and the streets are more than difficult to navigate. Not a great way to begin your Costa Rica vacation. Let the hotel pick you up and then from there, arrange your car to be available at the hotel location.

If you are a bargain shopper when it come to traveling, sometimes you can find airfares for as little as $400 per person, maybe even a little less if you are patient and internet savvy. For most thought, early reservations, can begin at $500 and up from there. And remember airline security when packing for your vacation. You will want to use a money belt in Costa Rica and don’t forget important documents, such as your passport and driver’s license. Keep your driver’s license separate from your passport. Keep your money separate from your credit cards. Also, do purchase a really good map of Costa Rica, you will need it, especially if you intend to branch out on your own adventures.

Taking a flight into Costa Rica is the preferred arrival, as most travelers do enter this way. There are also cruise ship ports on both sides of the small country. Some people travel to Costa Rica via Panama or Nicaragua. No matter how you get there, just get there. Costa Rican’s love their tourists and wait their arrival to share their tropical paradise with them.

Costa Rica Resorts

In 1930, the first hotel opened in Costa Rica. The Grand Hotel of Costa Rica has since become a historical landmark, and still is the only hotel to use Costa Rica in it’s name. Today, hundreds of hotel and resorts exist to serve the need of hungry tourists.

Costa Rica hosts a variety of resorts, some catering to certain arenas of tourists. They design their agendas around specialized vacations. There are many categories for these listings, as they make it easier for vacation planning.

Family resorts are designed to be cost effective and rich in activities, for, well, families. There are many to choose from. At Manuel Antonio National Park, the hotel packages are dedicated to families to get more from their vacation dollars. Some of these resorts are all inclusive, including everything possible within one price.

Honeymoon Resorts/Wedding Resorts are built around the illusion of romance, offering private and secluded quality of experience in Costa Rica. They offer the same activities as families but with a twist. Adults only and more luxury amenities, such as spa and nightlife entertainment.

Sports Resorts exist to focus on giving the tourist hungry for a certain activity opportunity to do so. This is popular with surfers, because much of the great surfing is not open to public and difficult to access unless by off terrain vehicles. A qualified guide is often necessary due to the dangers involved with surfing. If someone is new to surfing in Costa Rica, they need the help and planning of the resorts to avoid compromising or unsafe surfing experiences. Also, gaining popularity is the golf resorts. Costa Rica is just starting to recognize how much travelers love golf and are always seeking great turfs to embark on.

All inclusive resorts are a very attractive option for travelers to Costa Rica. The headache of proper planning in nonexistent when you choose an all inclusive resort, because everything is included in one lump price. That is the airfare, ground transportations, hotel, meals, activities (scheduled or unscheduled), and much more amenities unique to each resort package.

When to go? The best time to book your trip and get a good quality resort package is in the low season from April to November. This is the wet season with sunny mornings and rainy afternoons, but still a paradise to indulge in. Any time of year is beautiful in Costa Rica, however, the high season from December to April cause all travel prices to jump in cost, because of peak travel. November thru March is Costa Rica’s best surfing season. Many of the festivals and events are in dry season, although there are scattered events throughout the whole year.

Resorts are abundant in every region of Costa Rica. Whether it’s a specialized resort or an all inclusive, whether it’s low season or dry, you will be ensured of one thing, a memorable trip of a lifetime. The tropical climate, the beaches, the mountains, all the wildlife and local people…just waiting to let you in. Costa Rica is a perfect vacation destination.

Costa Rica Car Rentals

Over half of the tourists visiting Costa Rica opt to drive. Most of the roads are well maintained, however it is advised to pick up your car outside of San Jose. San Jose is the country’s capital and quite frankly, a rather confusing city to travel thru if you don’t know your way around. There are numerous car rental agencies available to choose from. You can call CentralAmerica for more information on what kind of car you will need for the areas you are visiting. Some more advanced tourists sites are harder to get to and require a 4x4 on the rugged or undeveloped roads. Surfers will opt to rent a 4x4 to get to the better surfing not available to general public. If you choose not to rent a care, taxi’s are a inexpensive way to sightsee.

Some of the more commonly known car rental companies are Adobe, Thrifty, Budget, Alamo, and National. Lesser known or locally owned rental companies are Eurocar, Hola’, Service, and Mapache. If you are looking at renting a Toyota, then stick to the Toyota company itself, they bring their own name brand in a lot cheaper than competitors renting their makes. There are two seasons in car rental pricing. The green season is lower rates, usually correlates with wet season in Costa Rica. The high season being when tourism is at it’s peak and everyone want to rent a car. During high season the prices generally jump anywhere from $10-25 higher on an individual vehicle than in green season.

The requirements on a car rental are similar to that of the United States. A valid drivers license and passport, plus a deposit with a major credit card are needed. You must be at least 21 years of age to rent a car. In return, the car rental companies usually provide pick up and drop off service, emergency road service, and bilingual guide assistance with road maps.

Driving in Costa Rica also means you have to obey their traffic laws as are set for the country. The speed limit on highways is 100 kph (kilometers per hour) unless other wise indicated. On secondary roads and some highways it is 60kph. In urban zones, 40kkph, and school zones, 25kph. Driving on the beach is strictly prohibited. And as in America, drugs and alcohol are not permitted, and you must wear seatbelts. There are a few hazards to avoid when driving thru Costa Rica. There is a lot more livestock and wildlife open grazing in Costa Rica, beware of their presence especially at night. The same with bicycles. A lot of the roads have a white asphalt surface known to become very slippery at the suggestion of rain. The potholes are abundant as well and deserve caution. You will notice local’s cars have distorted headlights due to these potholes and continued wear on the cars.

Remember the seasons in Costa Rica. If you are going to visit there in high season, it is advisable to book your car rental as early as possible, the same with hotels. If you book a car at the airport be prepared to pay the 13 percent airport tax. Proper planning for your vacation will save headaches and dollars down the road.

Costa Rica Coffee

Next to tourism and bananas, coffee is the primary export of Costa Rica. Early in the 19th century the Costa Rican government encouraged coffee production by offering anyone who wanted to be a coffee farmer 25 plants to begin with and bring to harvest. As a result of government policy, coffee plantations were born. Today, there are over 78,000 coffee growers in Costa Rica harvesting more than 250,000 acres of coffee beans a year. Costa Rica has 7 different zones for producing coffee, dividing the lowlands and the higher regions by lowlands producing a lighter, more floral bean, and the volcanic regions producing a stronger, more acidic aromatic coffee. Costa Rica is concerned about their environment and many coffee farmers have converted to green energy, using clean production methods. At one point in Costa Rica the effect on the environment from coffee farming became a major concern, due to all the mill pollutants being dumped into the rivers, and all the pesticides used in farming. Many growers have eliminated all use of pesticides and artificial fertilizers from their fields. Recycling coffee by products is slowing gaining in popularity as well.

Paper is made from the leftover plantations reducing waste and preserving the environment. Current trends have government and outside influences educating coffee farmers on how to conserve their land, up their production and profits, and produce a great bean by doing the opposite of what they have been taught. For instance, instead of clear cutting forests to make more clear land for coffee bean production, leave the forest intact, planting around the areas to produce a coffee bean organic and gourmet in nature, which is becoming more and more in high demand. They are also looking at pollination of the crop, with results being a larger crop and giving the farmer over a 20% boost in profits. Rain forest bees are top study in the pollination of coffee beans.

So, what does a Costa Rican cup of coffee taste like? Well, if you are pouring a cup from the Tarrazu’ valley, a small remote growing area, then it is a fruity finish with almost a chocolate roast taste. If you are choosing to perk La Magnolia coffee, then you got a cup of coffee which tastes like, well, a good coffee flavor of light refined and sweet finish. A perfect flavor for those who want a clear clean coffee. Costa Rican coffees are refined and lighter than compared to coffee beans in Asia, such as Sumatra which is a darker bean with a forest-earth taste. Because of executive order for growing beans passed in 1989, only Arabica beans are grown in Costa Rica. The coffee brewing system in Costa Rica comes from the ‘biggin’ system used in Victorian days. Coffee was placed in a cloth bag held together by a metal ring and placed in a pot used to be coffee pot.

Costa Rica is an agricultural country by tradition . Growing bananas and coffee and exporting for decades. The ever changing country is keeping up with the rest of the world on conservation and protection of environment, even when growing coffee.

Coast Rica

The history of Costa Rica is rich with stories of Jamaican slaves brought to the tiny country during the 17th century to work for the Spaniards, but it was Christopher Columbus who arrived in Costa Rica first. When he arrived in 1502, it was inhabited with approximately 400,000 Indians. A Spanish explore named Gil Gonzalez gave Costa Rica it’s name meaning “Rich Coast”. It wasn’t until 1821 when Costa Rica gained independence. Civilization existed in Costa Rica before Columbus however, probably for more than a thousand years. Archaeologists have discovered human inhabitants thru uncovering of ruins of a large ancient city east of San Jose. Among the finds, elaborate gold and jade work, which are believed to be from the Nahuati and Mexican Olmec civilizations. The people who inhabit Costa Rica today are of 98 percent Spanish descent called “Ticos”.

Located in Central America, it is surrounded by the pacific ocean on the west and south, with Nicaragua just north and the Caribbean sea on the east. It is governed by a strong democracy and has a strong, stable economy. Tourism is the major source of economic reliance now, unlike past exports of coffee, bananas, and beef. San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica with the majority of the population (around 1 million) living and working within the area .Other major cities in Costa Rica are Alajuela, Cartago, Heredia, Puntarenas, and Limon. Since it is a tropical county, there is no winter months and basically has only two seasons--wet and dry. In the central valley, the weather conditions remain in a spring like state all year long. Along the shores stays hotter and colder in the mountains. Because of the two oceans, the mountains, volcanoes, and rainforests, Costa Rica has 11 climates.

Over a quarter of the beautiful territory is protected and preserved for the all the species and fauna which makes Costa Rica as desirable as it is. The wealth of biodiversity in Costa Rica is said to be more than most other countries due to the high numbers in endangered species and the remarkable mix of ecosystems. The Osa conservation area is hosts to many of these varieties of ecosystems including a tropical fjord, mangroves, marine life, and cloud forest. This preserved region also inhabits the endangered jaguar, the pacific green sea and the leatherback turtles, ocelot, and the scarlet macaw. The importance of conservation rates highest with the people of Costa Rica as they respectively merge their needs, like agriculture, with the preservation needs in an exemplary manner while at the same time embracing tourism positively. When traveler’s visit this beautiful country, they can expect to find a majority of scenic and natural places as a preservation area. They use the biodiversity of their country as an instrument in tourism and development. Costa Rica is considered to be one of the top twenty countries in the world with the greatest biodiversity.

Costa Rica still remains a mystery to most. Eventually, there will be more and more curious and hungry visitors to the small country, with all there is to experience. And it is the first trip there which will keep them coming back, again and again.

Costa Rica Fishing

Whether you are accomplished in this sport or just beginning, there is something for everyone. The Oso peninsula is one the most popular hotspots for new and returning fishermen due to record catches every year. Situated between the pacific ocean and the Gulfo Dulce, the marine food sources are replenished over and over. Depending on your fishing interests, deep sea fishing is what Gulfo Dulce provides as a unforgettable experience. Costa Rica Girls

There are many organizations in Costa Rica which offer to introduce you to girls as dates, escorts, or even potential marriage partners. Simply put, you can arrive on vacation and leave with a bride. If you wish to be met by a Latino woman upon your arrival, there are available associations which specialize in that as well as providing a tour partner. Some have it set up to write and get photos of the girl months before you commence your vacation. Kind of like a ‘pen pal’.

Costa Rica offers four ways to meet girls:The first way is, as mentioned above, to write ahead of time and wait for the girl to write back. The second is to go through local agencies for listings of available girls. These services charge low fees, but however are scoffed against because of potential scams. Reputable tours vs. unrepeatable tours. There are two kinds. The first tour is a legitimate based tour established usually through the hotels for singles. Singles combine with other singles on adventures and activities predisposing them to available partners. The unrepeatable ones hand out party invitations to American men as a way to meet other singles. Prostitutes are usually the majority. The last way is a longer sometimes more successful way to establish a relationship with a Costa Rican girl and that is to use a personal matchmaker service which specializes in interviewing women and guide the relationship process in normal capacity. This usually requires desire and forethought before the vacation, establishing a relationship with a potential partner and using the vacation to Costa Rica as a vehicle to meet. Beware of places that make empty promises and just take your money, they are a plenty as much as established reputable organizations. Ask your hosts for more information on local color and places catering to the singles scenes. With all the nightlife available, the difference between the two can be easily sorted out before embarking on a regretted journey.

Singles bars are plenty available to ensure that all has a good time. San Jose hosts a lot of them. Such as, Key Largo, Happy Days, Blue Marlin, Idems and Vips, just to name a few. There are strip clubs lined along downtown San Jose for more visual entertainment. Club Puro Platino being the most reputable and easy accessed central location.

Some refer to night clubs in Costa Rica as ‘clip joints’. They run you a tab and charge it excessively as well as offer girls for escorts. When going out, limit the amount of cash you will carry, use the buddy system-travel in pairs of 2 or more. Be sure to keep all your valuables such as jewelry or credit cards back in your room. Stay under well lit lights and in localized travel areas. Prostitution is illegal in Costa Rica and is punishable by applicable law. As the hotel which ‘nightclubs’ to avoid, which are safe from escort propositions, or other relevant red flags.

Costa Rica can be the best place for meeting girls or become the worst depending on the method you choose to seek out other singles. Ask questions first.
